Description of Mark | The mark is a sound. The mark consists of a music sequence in the key of G major in one measure of 4/4 time. A first instrument portion of the sequence has a synthesized celeste-, glass harmonica- or chime-like warm timbre and starts as a soft pianissimo attack on the downbeat of beat one, playing an open-voiced G chord (with ninth and thirteenth) held for a half note that crescendos and consists of the notes G below middle C, D one step above middle C, A above middle C, and E at the interval of a tenth above middle C. With gentle accent an open-voiced double fortissimo G chord held for a quarter note follows, consisting of G one and one-half octaves below middle C, G below middle C, D located a ninth above middle C, and A located a thirteenth above middle C, and assuming a metallic overtone that first crescendos and then decays over the duration of the note. A second instrument portion has a vibraphone or vibraharp timbre and enters after an eighth rest on the upbeat of beat one as two sixteenth notes struck with soft pianissimo legato attack and played in succession, the first sixteenth note being G below middle C and the second sixteenth note being A below middle C; this second note is followed by a chord that is struck with normal attack on the downbeat of the second beat of the measure and held for two beats, consisting of F-sharp above middle C and A above middle C. A third instrument portion consisting of a synthesized wind sound starts as a fortissimo legato attack on the downbeat of beat one and is played as three successive quarter notes, the first two with tremolo, the first of which decrescendos with decay over the duration of the first beat and then re-crescendos to the second quarter note, which decrescendos with decay over the duration of the second beat and then re-crescendos to the third quarter note which is sounded double fortissimo with accented articulation and rapid decay. The phrase increases in volume as it is played and swells on the third beat, then decays with slight sustain to a clean cut-off. |
